Charles Alunni appointed as Coordinator of CSG

The Grothendieck Institute is glad to announce the appointment of Prof. Charles Alunni as the new Coordinator of the Centre for Grothendieckian Studies (CSG), starting from 1 April 2025.

Charles Alunni is a French philosopher, former professor at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa (Italy); he founded and directed the Laboratoire disciplinaire “Pensée des sciences” at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris.

Alunni is well known for his work in the philosophy of science and has extensively studied the thoughts of notable figures like Gaston Bachelard and Gilles Châtelet. His research interests include the interplay between mathematics, philosophy, and linguistics. Alunni has authored several books and numerous articles on the history and philosophy of contemporary mathematics. He has also organized international conferences and edited several books, and is a member of the editorial board of the journal Revue de synthèse (Fondation pour la Science/Caphès).

Charles Alunni comments: “Succeeding our friend and colleague Fernando Zalamea, it is obviously a pleasure and a very great honor for me to be able to contribute to the development of the Centre for Grothendickian Studies, a Centre which will undoubtedly become the reference for decades to come and for all those who intend to work on the oeuvre of Alexander Grothendieck, which is at once monumental, disproportionate and transdisciplinary. As Coordinator of the Centre, I wish to support the research activities of the Centre (symposia, articles, monographs), broaden the approach and understanding of a work with many faces, stimulate the interest of younger generations, coordinate the transcription of unpublished manuscripts (mathematics, literature, philosophy or sociology), and work on the creation of the biennial journal Quaderni del Centro di Studi Grothendieckiani (QCSG), in collaboration with Mateo Carmona, archivist and manager of the Centre’s website, Olivia Caramello, founder of the Centre, and all the Research Associates and Volunteers of the Centre”.

We give a most cordial welcome to Charles and wish him every success in his new role.
At the same time, we would like to extend our thanks to Prof. Zalamea for his collaboration and wish him all the best for the future.
